List of towns in New Zealand facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

New Zealand has many interesting places, and this article lists its towns! In New Zealand, the word "town" doesn't have a special legal meaning anymore. Long ago, some places were called "Town Districts," but those rules changed in 1989.

This list includes most of the places where many people live in New Zealand. These are often called urban areas. If a town has an asterisk (*) next to its name, it means Statistics New Zealand officially counts it as an "urban area."

Some towns, like Ashburton or Levin, are often the main town in a larger local government area called a "District." Sometimes, the District even has the same name as the town! Other places, like Wainuiomata or Port Chalmers, are actually part of a bigger city. People often call these places suburbs of their nearby cities. Many of these towns used to be called "boroughs" for a long time, especially in the 1900s.
