Kansas is a state located in the Midwestern part of the United States. In 2010, about 2.8 million people lived there, making it the 34th largest state by population. Kansas is also the 13th largest state by land area, covering about 81,759 square miles (211,754 square kilometers). The state is divided into 105 counties and has 627 official cities.

What Makes a City in Kansas?

In Kansas, all official towns and communities are called cities. Unlike some other states that might have "towns" or "villages," Kansas only uses the term "city." Once a place becomes an official city in Kansas, it stays a city forever, no matter how much its population changes.

Cities in Kansas are grouped into three different classes based on how many people live there:

  • 3rd Class Cities: When a community first becomes an official city, it starts as a 3rd class city. To do this, it usually needs to have at least 300 people living there.
  • 2nd Class Cities: A city can ask to become a 2nd class city when its population is between 2,000 and 15,000 people. If a city has between 2,000 and 5,000 people, it can choose to stay a 3rd class city. But once it reaches 5,000 people, it must become a 2nd class city.
  • 1st Class Cities: A city can ask to become a 1st class city when it has at least 15,000 people. If a city has between 15,000 and 25,000 people, it can choose to stay a 2nd class city. However, when it reaches 25,000 people, it must become a 1st class city.
