List of current heads of state and government facts for kids
A head of state is the main leader of a country, like a president or a king. A head of government is the person who runs the daily business of the government, often called a prime minister or chancellor. Sometimes, one person is both the head of state and the head of government, especially in countries with a presidential system. This means they are in charge of everything!
In other countries, like those with a parliamentary system, the head of state (like a king or a president) and the head of government (like a prime minister) are different people. The head of government usually handles the day-to-day running of the country.
In some countries, like Andorra and Vatican City, a religious leader can also be a head of state. For example, the Pope is the head of state for Vatican City.
This list shows the current leaders. It also includes leaders who have just been chosen but haven't started their job yet, like a president-elect.
