This list contains all municipalities incorporated as cities in New York state and shows the county in which each city is located.
Two cities (New York City and Albany) were incorporated in the 17th century, while the most recent incorporation, of Rye, occurred in 1942. Except for Sherrill, the cities are distinct from towns. Geneva and New York are the only cities in more than one county.

Extremes in size and population
The most populous and largest city by area in the state is by far New York, home to 8,175,133 people and comprising just over 300 square miles (800 km2) of land (468.87 square miles (1,210 km2) including water). The least populous city is Sherrill, with just 3,071 inhabitants. The smallest city by area is Mechanicville, which covers 0.91 square miles (2.4 km2) (of which 0.08 square miles (0.2 km2) is water).
